One of the opportunities photography affords me is an excuse to talk with "interesting" people that I might otherwise not have. When I have my camera and come across people I think are engaged in "being themselves", I have been delighted to find that most of the time, people will let me photograph them if I make an effort to introduce myself and explain why I want to take their picture. It's still a bit scary at times, but I'm much bolder about introducing myself with my camera and people are often apologetic if they won't grant permission.
I also capture candid images when in public and at a distance. Generally in these cases, it is the activity and relationship to others and the environment I am trying to photograph, as opposed to the picture of the person's face.
I'd be interested in hearing from others about their approach in photographing people.
Most of these images were captured in a workshop in downtown Boston with
Harvey Stein.
