In August 2011, Hurricane Irene swept up the east coast and took direct aim at eastern Vermont and western New Hampshire. Rainfall of 3-7 inches produced a floor that washed away many homes, washed out roads, and created public health and safety emergencies. Living in Massachusetts, I was keenly aware of the damage, but not witness it until 8 months later—a time when I was unprepared to see the enormous amount of damage still present.

I was struck also by the fact that as people left their homes, their despair and grief was left behind and still spoke to those of us who were shocked at what we saw.
